Beeswax: An Essential Ingredient for Beard Care Products

What is Beeswax?
According to D-Tek Live Bee Removal, a full-service bee removal and bee control company, ”beeswax is the building block of the hive. Honeybees from the genus Apis produce it to build the hexagon-shaped honeycomb where bees live, work, raise their young and store their food supplies. In its natural form, beeswax is actually white or translucent. It becomes the light golden color we associate with beeswax when stained by pollen or propolis. Beeswax is made up of about 300 different compounds. Its composition can vary slightly depending on where the honeybees live. Worker bees are responsible for producing beeswax. They have special glands on the underside of their abdomens that secrete the wax in thin sheets called scales.”

Health Benefits of Beeswax
Beeswax is used in medicine to lower and improve cholesterol levels and treat or manage pain. Additionally, it also helps with ulcers, diarrhea, hiccups, and swelling (inflammation). Research shows that the long-chain fatty acids and alcohols found in beeswax may reduce high blood cholesterol levels, a risk factor for heart disease. For instance, one review notes that beeswax alcohols may help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol by up to 29% while raising “good” HDL cholesterol by 8–15%.
Additionally, other studies (1, 2, 3) show that beeswax extracts may offer protection against fungi and disease-causing bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Salmonella enterica, and E. coli. It may also help protect your gut against certain parasites. However, more human research is needed.
Beeswax in Skin Care
Beeswax forms a natural barrier on the skin's surface—protecting the skin against the elements of daily life, environmental irritants, and harsh weather. Unlike other substances such as petroleum jelly, beeswax allows the skin to breathe and seals in moisture to help the skin stay hydrated and soft. Being a humectant, beeswax keeps the skin plump, nourished, and hydrated, thus it is highly beneficial for people with excessively dry skin. Refreshing, restorative, and gentle enough for use on even the most sensitive skin, beeswax soothes itchiness and irritation.
According to Arthi Raguram, the founder of Deyga Organics, “the regenerative quality and anti-inflammatory properties of beeswax help to reduce irritation, redness, and inflammation afflicted with acne, while its antiseptic benefits facilitate the healing process. Rich in Vitamin A, beeswax act as a topical treatment for acne and reduces acne scarring by promoting the regeneration of cells. The non-comedogenic nature of beeswax reduces acne breakouts and keeps the skin healthy and clear.”
A 2018 study also concluded that beeswax, as well as other 'botanical anti-inflammatories', were effective for managing sensitive skin and even outperformed skincare products with synthetic ingredients. For people with sensitive skin, it’s recommended to use products containing beeswax because of their anti-inflammatory and humectant properties.
Beeswax in Hair Care
According to Healthline, “the vitamin A content in beeswax moisturizes hair, smooths flyaway strands, keeps styles intact, and straightens hair. It’s particularly useful for natural hair as well as twisted and braided styles. Its ability to seal strands makes beeswax a good way to hide split ends — although the only way to permanently get rid of split ends is to cut them off.”
Beeswax can also be used to promote hair growth. A 2016 study found that a hair wax containing beeswax significantly increased hair length after daily use for 30 days. However, the formula did include other ingredients, so it’s hard to say if beeswax was the cause. Beeswax can also have a positive effect on the scalp, too. Research has shown it can soothe symptoms of skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dandruff.
Beeswax in Beard Care
Beeswax is one of the main ingredients in both beard balms and mustache waxes. It helps moisturize hair and firmly hold it in place. Beeswax can even reportedly repels everyday dirt and grime. These beard products keep beards soft, shiny, and healthy.
